SESSIONAL LECTURER POSTINGS
We also hire faculty into term appointments for a specified period of time for courses taught in the Department of Earth, Environmental and Geographic Sciences . Sessional lecturers teach and/or perform related duties, including course coordination or lab supervision, for a period of less than 12 months.
CURRENT POSTINGS
The Earth, Environmental and Geographic Sciences Department of the Irving K. Barber Faculty of Science at UBC, Okanagan campus, requires a Sessional Lecturer to teach the following courses during the 2025/26 Winter Session Term 1.
2025/26W – TERM 1 (September 1 to December 31, 2025)
Lecture T/Th 8:00am – 9:30am
Introduction to major groups of organisms in inland waters. Cyanobacteria, algae, plants, and animals; their ecology, evolution; conservation and their use in biomonitoring. This course requires students to collect specimens from the field.
Applicants with a PhD in the discipline, or a related discipline, and relevant research and post-secondary teaching experience are preferred. Previous experience and familiarity with the web-based learning management system Canvas is considered an asset. Applicants based in Kelowna, BC, are preferred, though remote instruction for Canadian citizens or residents who reside in Canada may be possible.

The minimum compensation rate per credit per period for the Department of Earth, Environmental and Geographic Sciences is $3,186.37 equaling $9,559.11 per 3-credit course.

Spatial data representation; raster and vector models; spatial database structure; coordinate reference frames and projections; spatial statistics; metadata and data standards; associated technologies and data sources. Laboratory exercises require ArcGIS.

Students
Teaching Assistants
Each academic year, we have openings for Graduate Teaching Assistants (GTAs) and Undergraduate Teaching Assistants (UTAs) for Earth & Environmental Sciences and Physical Geography courses in the Summer and Winter Sessions.
In both terms of the Summer Session (Term 1: May – June and Term 2: July – August) and both terms of the Winter Session (Term 1: September – December and Term 2: January – April).
The Teaching Assistant duties may include:
- Instruction in labs
- Marking assignments, labs, and exams
- Discussion periods
- Tutorials and lectures
- Invigilation duties
- Academic assistance to students in office hours
- Driving a vehicle for a field course
The hours will not exceed an average of 12 hours per week. Wages are per the new BCGEU Collective Agreement.
